Your first rent invoice
When a lease has a tenant and its terms are complete, Nutshell creates the first rent invoice for you. This page is about that first invoice only.
What the invoice says
- The period: the lease's first billing period. For a lease starting on 1 March that is paid monthly, the first period is 1 March to 31 March.
- The amount: the rent you entered for each payment.
- Issue date and due date: both are the first day of the period.
The invoice is something the tenant owes you. It appears under Receivables and in the tenant's record. No money is recorded as received until you record a payment.
If the lease started in the past
If you add a lease that began before today, Nutshell asks whether the rent for the earlier periods has already been invoiced outside Nutshell, and you must answer:
- No: start from the first period. The first period is invoiced now and shows as overdue.
- Yes, up to now: start from a later period you choose. Nutshell begins billing from the period you pick.
- Yes, all of it: create no invoice for this lease. Nothing is invoiced now.
The form shows the first invoice (period, amount, due date and whether it will show as overdue) before you save, so nothing is billed by surprise.
When no invoice is created
Nutshell tells you instead of guessing:
- Rent invoice already exists for that period: it never creates a second one.
- First period needs manual handling: the lease is shorter than one billing period, so the amount would have to be part of a period. Nutshell does not invent a partial amount.
- Lease isn't active: a lease that is still a Draft is not billed.
- No valid billing period: the dates and the payment frequency leave nothing to bill.
